Union Camp has been a tradition with the PA Joint Board, Workers United since 2008. Everyone who enters this camp enjoys it so much they want to return every year. This year was no different.
We had members from our New York and New Jersey Joint Board join us. It was a great experience meeting them and hearing about what transpires in their shops.
The class time is very rigorous and the days are long. You check in at 3:30 pm Sunday and check out at 11:00 am on Friday. We hear many complaints the first day, but by the end of the week, they all want to stay another week. The instructors we had this year were Jocelyn Lunney, David Melman, Christina Chang and Christine Miller. Our guest speakers this year were Richard Minter, Christina Hajagos Clausen, Ragini Kapadia and Josh Ferris.
We are constantly training and teaching our leaders to be leaders so this year we had some of our members teach some classes. Kelli Trent from Delta Dental, John Thomas (JT) from TJ Maxx and David Lee from Marshall’s.
The week is filled with vital information about Unions and what is happening to Unions. Our classes range from Union and Legal Rights to Common Sense Politics to Grievance Investigation and Grievance Writing to Advocacy to Building Political Power. Just to name a few.
During the Tuesday evening session we discuss Taking a Stand. Why does the Union Care about this issue? We do this class at Hyner Park along with a picnic dinner.
Wednesday evening session was a great event. Every year we do Murder Mystery. The talent we had was amazing.
Some group activities were volley ball, planning a picnic by the pool and our final night dancing the night away.
Every year we the instructors walk away in awe of the members that showed up. This year was no exception. We believe that they will be good ambassadors for the Union.
